Our Co-op
Our Philosophy

It is common for school to be inspired by an educational philosophy, such as Montessori or Reggio-Emilio, but NVNS is not defined by one philosophy. NVNS is built around the research-based needs of children, ages 2.5 to kindergarten. This means offering free, uninterrupted play with plenty of age appropriate and sensory-rich materials which naturally support STEAM, school readiness, gross and fine motor skills. Every day there are opportunities for imaginative play, gluing, cutting, painting, building, splashing, pouring, dressing-up, digging, climbing, viking, running, mud cooking, gardening and so much more. Shoes are always optional and extra clothing is available to keep children warm and comfortable after play gets wet and messy. It has been a productive day at nursery school when children are picked up in loaner clothing with a bag of wet sandy, and/or painted-on clothes to take home for the wash.
Learning should be fun.
We offer a play-based curriculum in a supportive environment where children are free to explore who they are and how they relate to others and the environment through active play. Children have an opportunity to make choices about what, where, and with whom to play within an extended time period. This allows them to experience success in creating and determining their own play.
Building a positive self-image and positive social relationships are the main goals of our programs. With the self-confidence and interpersonal skills acquired at NVNS, children are ready and able to meet the academic and social challenges that lie ahead.
We provide an organic approach to academics, exploring STEAM topics through child-led interest and play. Our learning spaces are fluid, connecting the indoors and outdoors, promoting engagement with the natural environment all around them.
Our Co-op, Our Community

Everyone is welcome
At NVNS, all families are welcome to share their talents and traditions in the classroom. Each family’s cultural, artistic, musical, technical, and other unique contributions add to children’s knowledge of our diverse world and help expand the perspectives and experiences of everyone in our community. NVNS families also organize optional summer playdates around Napa and the greater Bay Area. Many families spend time together after school at many of the plentiful parks and outdoor spaces, where both kids and parents deepen their bonds.
