It's not just a day, it's a movement

Children engaged in imaginative play resembling a tea party

Napa Valley Cooperative Nursery School is unlike other pre-schools.

Thanks to a community of supporters, our co-op children have a place they can continue to thrive in. Our program is focused on the whole child developing kindness, confidence, and agency through play.

WHO WE ARE

A parent cooperative nursery school is a school built around community. Every year, enrolled families come together to operate the school. NVNS’s director, Adrianne Koford, is a professional teacher and expert in early childhood, but all of Teacher Adrianne’s classroom assistants are adult family members or caregivers (“working adults”) who serve on a rotating basis from each enrolled family. As an organization, our cooperative nursery school is a nonprofit and democratic organization, operating in accordance with established Bylaws. NVNS has a Board of Directors that meets monthly and there are monthly parent meetings for school business and parent education. In addition to working the classroom, each family has a school job and participates in maintaining the high expectations of quality and cleanliness within the learning spaces.

It is common for school to be inspired by an educational philosophy, such as Montessori or Reggio-Emilio, but NVNS is not defined by one philosophy. NVNS is built around the research-based needs of children, ages 2.5 to kindergarten. This means offering free, uninterrupted play with plenty of age appropriate and sensory-rich materials which naturally support STEAM, school readiness, gross and fine motor skills. Every day there are opportunities for imaginative play, gluing, cutting, painting, building, splashing, pouring, dressing-up, digging, climbing, viking, running, mud cooking, gardening and so much more. Shoes are always optional and extra clothing is available to keep children warm and comfortable after play gets wet and messy. It has been a productive day at nursery school when children are picked up in loaner clothing with a bag of wet sandy, and/or painted-on clothes to take home for the wash.

Donating to our non-profit nursery school co-op is a powerful and important decision because it allows you to directly support a community-driven preschool that prioritizes high-quality early childhood education at an affordable cost. When you support our program you’re also enabling parent involvement and ultimately giving back to the local community by ensuring access to enriching learning experiences for all children, their families, and especially those who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Your contribution can help fund essential programs, equipment upgrades, and scholarships for families in need. Thank you for considering us in your annual giving.
